If a military draft was to be re-activated, we need to have all local boards across the state operational and ready to start hearing claims for military service reclassification (exemption/deferment) within 45-60 days.
To serve a candidate:
~ Must be 18 years old or older.
~ Must be a citizen of the United States.
~ If male, must have registered with Selective Service, except those born from March 29, 1957,
through December 31, 1959.
~ Must not be a member of law enforcement occupation as defined by Selective Service policy.
(example: police officer or judge)
~ Must not be an active or retired career member of the Armed Forces or Reserves or National
Guard.
~ Must not have been convicted of any criminal offense.
Board members serve until:
~ They decide to resign (health, job, or other reasons)
~ Move out of the county or state. If they move to another county, we usually try to
transfer them to the new county even if there is already a primary board member
assigned (it's nice to have backups that are already appointed and trained).
~ They reach 20 years of service and are retired. There is no pension as this is a
voluntary position but there is a nice certificate signed by the Director of the Selective
Service.
After a telephone interview with KSARNG Selective Service Officer, MAJ Matt Indermuehle, the recommendation would go to the Governor. If approved by the Governor, the candidate would receive a federal appointment from the Director of Selective Service on behalf of the President of the United States.
Board Information
Saline county is a member of a 3-member board that includes Saline, Ottawa and Lincoln counties ( 1 board member from each county). Three board members are needed for an operational board (quorum).
There are no board meetings during peace-time. There is annual online training for everyone and some local boards may be invited to participate in exercises to evaluate our readiness plans in the state, region and national level. Local board members are only required to stay current on annual refresher training.
